GCSE RESULTS 2015
The Shared Learning Trust’s South Academy is pleased to announce positive 2015 GCSE results with big improvements to grades in many subjects.
Top grades in Physics and Chemistry have risen by an amazing 15% but the biggest rise was in GCSE Media where A*-C grades rose by a staggering 27%!
All students have achieved great things but top marks this year go to:
Sannah Rathor achieved a fabulous 12 A*-A. The subjects she achieved this in include English language and literature, Maths and 3 Sciences.
Patrick Lu, a talented pianist, also achieved 12 A*-A grades
Ailsa Edgar achieved 11 A*-A grades in the academic subjects including A*s in Psychology and Physics
Sharon Mai achieved 10 A*-A grades including top grades in Media and Sport.
Principal Cathy Barr said; “I am so proud of our GCSE students. They have worked so hard throughout the year and many have given up their weekends and holidays for extra work and revision. Examinations are undoubtedly getting more challenging, but this cohort have shown that hard work and determination pays dividends.”

Shared Learning Trust Sixth Forms Celebrate Best Ever Results.
The Shared Learning Trust’s South and West Academy Sixth Forms are delighted to announce their best ever sets of A Level results, with a higher proportion of students gaining the top A* to C grades than in any previous year.
Almost half of all students attending the South Academy, located on Rotherham Avenue in Luton, achieved the top grades: 47 percent of students achieved grades A* to C, which is an 8 percent increase on last year.
Meanwhile at the West Academy located on Leagrave High Street in Luton, 68 percent achieved the A* to C and in both academies 100 percent of students attained success in Level 3 vocational subjects with 90 percent gaining a Distinction grading or above.
South Academy Principal, Cathy Barr, said the results reflect the tireless work put in by staff and students alike:
“I am delighted at the number of students who have achieved top A Level grades this year. These results are crucial for young people as a platform to university places and good jobs”.
Although all students did well, there were some notable successes at the South Academy. Jennifer McGrattan, a South Academy student since Year 7 achieved AAB. “I am speechless, I can’t believe I have done so well! Thank you to all the staff at the South Academy for their help and support.” Jennifer has secured a place at Leeds University to study Sociology.
Dexter Gwavava and Reece Jones both achieved two Distinction* grades in Sport and a C grade in Psychology. Dexter said; “I’m really pleased as I have the grades needed to go to Nottingham Trent University. My teachers have always been around when I needed help. My results sum up my time at the South Academy.”
Etta Speight came to the South Academy Sixth Form two years ago. She was nervous as she had previously not done well at post-16 studies prior to joining, but at the South Academy she achieved BCD. “I am so pleased as I have exactly what I need to take up my place at Portsmouth University. I am grateful for the encouragement I have received and have really appreciated the persistence of staff who never let me give up or gave up on me.”
West Academy Principal, Andy Hardy, added: “All of our Year 13 students are highly ambitious and the vast majority of them plan to go on to further their studies at university. I’m very proud of all that they’ve achieved”.
The results are great news for the students and also for both academies, which are part of a family of 5 schools run by the Shared Learning Trust. Chief Executive Officer, Andrew Cooper, added his congratulations:
“It’s been a momentous year for all the team at the Shared Learning Trust and these results are the icing on the cake”.

Academy Staff and Pupils Delighted with Ofsted Report
Inspectors visited our Academy at the start of May and gave it the second highest grading, noting in particular that the senior staff and Governors “have successfully raised the quality of teaching and improved students’ achievements in most subjects, including English and mathematics”.
The Ofsted team also praised the Academy for its proactive work on keeping students safe, which was graded ‘outstanding’.
Principal, Cathy Barr, said: “This was a really robust inspection: The Ofsted team visited a lot of lessons and spoke to many staff and students. Our work on tackling radicalisation and many other potentially dangerous issues for young people was recognised as particularly exceptional. I am very proud of all that we’ve achieved.”
Ofsted described the Barnfield South students as “proud ambassadors” and the youngsters were pleased to have played such an integral part in the inspection. Head Girl, 16 year-old Shakerah Brown, said: “I think this is well deserved as staff and students have worked brilliantly together to achieve our goals.”
When asked by the lead inspector to describe the Academy, a group of year 7 to 11 students said: “it’s a place to strive and achieve, in a place of opportunities.”
